Camille Kerckvoorde from Haacht was a young Belgian soldier who served in the 1st Rgt Chasseurs á Pied. Camille was among wounded soldiers to arrive in Ilfracombe on 21st October 1914, he had been shot in the head. After being cared for at Westwell Hall he was discharged into the care of the Mr and Mrs Teeling of 41 High Street where he died just before his 25th birthday on 27th July 1915. There were many touching reports of the funeral of Camille. A photograph of his funeral making its way from the RC church to the cemetery at Holy Trinity shows hundreds of people following the cortege to his final resting place. A touching Memorial published in the Ilfracombe Chronicle on August 7th 1915 by a Belgian Priest talks of Camille’s last days. He talks of standing in the room with tears in his eyes watching Mrs Teeling and Mrs Johnson sooth his pain and rocking him to sleep, talking to him of his mother and his country.
